Trade-Off Rules |
 |
|
This pool takes place in three key steps:
|
- Step 1 (12:00am September 1st, 2003 EST until 11:59pm January 31st, 2004 EST)
Up until January 31st, 2004 EST everyone who wishes to take part in this contest will submit their entry information, through the Internet, to the folks at Trade-Off. Those who enter will not be able to submit picks until Step 2 kicks in, on January 1st, 2004 EST. This faze is mainly for signing up once hockey season is starting up and getting under way.
When submitting your information and signing up, you will supply a name and password for yourself. You will then be able to log in to the contest on the Internet and make your selections using an easy to use web page interface once Step 2 kicks in.
- Step 2 (12:00am January 1st, 2004 EST until 11:59 January 31st, 2004 EST)
You will be able to access your pick information at any and all times during this faze. After 11:59pm on January 31st you will no longer be able to access your submission information. At that point all selections are final. The beauty of it all is that you can freely change your mind and float in and out of your member administration area this whole month until you're happy you've fine tuned your picks to perfection but whatever you pick by midnight January 31st is it! No submissions will be accepted after 11:59!
During this period you will not be able to view the picks, as they stand at any given moment, from the other people involved in the contest. You may want to get some ideas off of them or maybe you just want to check on the competition, but we won't allow it! It is entirely up to you to come up with your picks. You will get to see the other contestants' picks when Step 3 of the contest kicks in on February 24, 2004 EST.
During Step 2, you will be able to make 20 picks with each pick having multiple categories to choose from. Here is a list of the categories each of your 20 picks will consist of:
- - Player To Be Traded
You will choose which player in the NHL will be traded during the time from 12:00am February 24, 2004 EST until the end of the trade deadline on 12:00am March 9, 2004 EST. This time period will henceforth be referred to as Step 3.
This player has to be a member of the NHL at the time of trade. You receive no points if this player is a member of the minor leagues at the time of trade. However, this player may be traded to a team and wind up in the minors subsequently after the trade.
If this player gets traded more than once during Step 3, you still only receive points once. Basically, once you hit on the Player Traded, you can't receive more points if he gets traded again.
- - Team To Be Traded To
Here you will choose what team you believe this particular player will wind up being traded to. If you hit on this, you will receive extra points for correctly naming the team traded to. Keep in mind that if the player doesn't get traded to the team you pick here that if he gets traded again before the deadline you can still pick up points if he winds up on this team you pick because it does not matter what team they are being traded FROM in this contest. You still only receive points once for picking the player, though.
Once the team traded to is hit, you can't hit on it twice, not that there's a likelyhood of a player being traded back to the same team twice in two weeks but weird deals abound where a player is traded to one team then another in one hour. You never know what will happen in those crazy two weeks!
- - Date Of Trade
Extra points here for being within 4 days of the day the player is traded. You receive 300 extra points for guessing the day itself. You receive 250 points for guessing within a day before or after, 200 points for guessing within 2 days before or after, 150 points for 3 days before or after, and 100 points for guessing within 4 days before or after. This leaves a span of 9 days to get some extra points to your total.
Again, if your player is traded prior to your picking day, you have a chance to secure points in this category if they are subsequently traded another time where it falls within your time range. However, if they are traded within the time period you pick twice, you will be awarded the best point total you're entitled to (you get the points for the closest date).
- - Player Traded For
Here's a good place to pick up bonus points. You can choose a player that you believe will be traded in exchange for your Player To Be Traded. Draft picks do not count. You have to name names here. Feel free to add in names of players that are in the minors! This is where your AHL, ECHL etc. knowledge can pay off.
You will receive 300 points if you hit on this player.
- Step 3 (February 24, 2004 EST at 12:00am EST to the end of the trading deadline on 12:00am March 9, 2004 EST)
During Step 3, we at Trade-Off will update the standings as necessary throughout the 2 week period. Points will be tallied, and the results will be posted live to the Internet for all to view. At the end of the deadline, when Step 3, and the pool, ends, the final point totals will be taken into account and three winners will be chosen and posted on the winners page. Winners will also be notified by email. The following are the prizes to be handed out:
- - First Place -
Gift Pack 1 (To Be Determined).
- - Second Place -
Gift Pack 2 (To Be Determined).
- - Third Place -
Gift Pack 3 (To Be Determined).
Points -
- 200 points for Player To Be Traded:
This is the main category in each pick. If it is not satisfied, the other sub-categories don't even get looked at.
- 300 points for Team Traded To:
Why is it more for this sub-category than the main category? Because it's not as hard to figure who's a hot commodity for playoff bound teams than it is to figure out who's gonna shell out the money for them in the end.
- 300 points for Player Traded For:
You may get an extra 300 points here in this subcategory.
- 300 points Maximum for Date Traded:
Good sub-category to help eliminate chances of having to have a tie breaker at the end. You get 300 points for hitting the exact day of trade, 250 points for being 1 day off in either direction, 200 points for being 2 days off in either direction, 150 points for being 3 days off in either direction, and 100 points for being 4 days off in either direction.
- 500 points for Main Bonus:
If you guess all 4 categories on the nose, meaning you guess the Player To Be Traded, the Date He's Traded, the Team Traded To, and the Player Traded For, you will receive a 500 point bonus for that player. Theoretically, if you were lucky enough and guessed perfect on all 20 picks, you would get 10,000 bonus points. Good luck on getting them all, though!
- 100 points for a "Hat Trick" Bonus:
A Hat Trick Bonus is a 100 point bonus for guessing everything but the Date Traded correctly. That would mean hitting on the Player Traded, Team Traded To, and Player Traded For. Obviously, if you have a Main Bonus for a player (meaning you hit on all 4 categories) you will meet the criteria for a Hat Trick Bonus, as well, but we only credit you for the Main Bonus if that happens. Therefore, anytime you get a Main Bonus you will not receive the extra 100 points for the Hat Trick Bonus.

| - Miscellaneous Stuff to Address -
|
| Trades finalized after the trade deadline on 12:00am March 9, 2004 EST are excluded from this contest. Oftentimes there are a few straggling trades that don't officially conclude until after a player is checked out by a physician or something weird like that. The trade MUST be finalized by the deadline to count here.
|
The contest information, such as your picks, other people's picks, and point totals will be viewable to everyone until the end of April. Once April is over, the contest won't be viewable anymore. Your account information will remain accessable, however, and in September next year's contest will start anew.
Come September, all picks will be reset in the database and an email will be sent out to all account holders that a new contest has begun. It will all start over again at that point.
